of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars The Idea of the Catholic University for the Twenty-First Century September 28-30, 2007 Renaissance, Washington DC Hotel We hope that you will be able to join us for the thirtieth convention of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars. Borrowing a line from Cardinal Newman, we have chosen as the theme for this meeting The Idea of the Catholic University for the Twenty-First Century. Our keynote speaker for this meeting will be Archbishop Donald Wuerl, who will celebrate Mass for the members of the Fellowship on Saturday morning, September 29th and then deliver his plenary address. Later in the day there will be presentations on the topic of the engagement of Catholic universities with secular culture by Professor Chris Wolfe (Marquette University) and Professor Michael Aeschliman (Boston University). The convention begins on Friday afternoon (September 28) with two fine Newman scholars. Professor John Crosby of the Franciscan University of Steubenville will bring to bear not just Newman's The Idea of a University but also his Essay on the Development of Doctrine to reflect on the role of the Catholic university for the Church's engagement with contemporary culture. Professor Karl Schmude, a member of the Fellowship from Australia, will join the figure of St. Edmund Campion to that of Cardinal Newman for his considerations on the relation of religious truth and intellectual freedom. We are also pleased to offer a number of panels on contemporary issues. On Friday evening Father John Piderit, S.J. and Dr. Melanie Morey, authors of the recent study Catholic Higher Education: A Culture in Crisis (New York: Oxford Univ. Press, 2006), will offer the results of their study of various models for Catholic higher education. Our Saturday afternoon will feature a discussion of Catholic Studies Programs at Catholic universities, with Sr. Paula Jean Miller of the University of St. Thomas (Houston TX) and Professor John Cavadini (University of Notre Dame) as discussants. And on Sunday we will host a discussion on Catholic education on secular campuses, with presentations by Msgr. Stuart Swetland (currently at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, formerly Director and Chaplain of St. John.s Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois) and Professor Robert L. Wilken (Univ. of Virginia). As always, the meetings of the Fellowship promise to provide much food for thought, and much good Catholic fellowship. We are very pleased that Father Samuel Weber will once again be helping us with our liturgies. Please join us.
