Is there a Catholic Theology of Masculinity?

By Mr. Peter Holmes

Abstract: Much has been written about the unique and positive contribution of women to relationships, the Church and society. It seems there has been relatively little attention given to masculinity and manhood. Even a cursory examination of the theological literature and of our society in general reveals a great confusion as to the definition of masculinity, the proper roles and responsibilities of men. A number of answers to the question “what does manhood look like in the modern era?” have been popular with men but criticised by academics for their oversimplification of complicated matters. This thesis derives a specifically Catholic understanding of masculinity from the magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church in order to provide a basis for future development of the Catholic understanding of masculinity and to propose a possible future development of Catholic theology in this area
