Metaphysics, Anthropology, the Virtues, and the Christian Physician

By Ms. Louise A. Mitchell

I’m examining the 7 editions of Beauchamp and Childress’s Principles of Biomedical Ethics for their discussion of virtue and their grounding for it, why virtue can play a minor role in the first editions and a major role in later editions and perhaps move back to a minor role if virtue ethics falls out of favor, why virtue is necessary for bioethics, and how metaphysics (truth, the good, teleology) can provide a solid grounding that will allow virtue a stable place in bioethics.
